An axiomatic characterization of Bayes' Rule

چکیده

This paper provides an axiomatic characterization of Bayes’ Rule that is widely used for updating beliefs. Bayes’ Rule is viewed as a revision rule. Consider an agent whose belief about a set of states is characterized by a point in a unit simplex of appropriate dimension. Now new information emerges that rules out the possible occurrence of some of the states. The revision rule then assigns new probabilities over the subset of states that is not ruled out. The paper provides a set of axioms that characterizes Bayes’ Rule. The main axiom is Path Independence. A revision rule satisfies Path Independence if the probability distribution over any set of states is unaffected by the order in which new information comes in. D 2004 Elsevier B.V. Belief revision generalized: A joint characterization of Bayes' and Jeffrey's rules

We present a general framework for representing belief-revision rules and use it to characterize Bayes’s rule as a classical example and Je¤rey’s rule as a non-classical one. In Je¤rey’s rule, the input to a belief revision is not simply the information that some event has occurred, as in Bayes’s rule, but a new assignment of probabilities to some events. Despite their di¤erences, Bayes’s and J...

Can Bayes' Rule Be Justified by Cognitive Rationality Principles

The justification of Bayes' rule by cognitive rationality principles is undertaken by extending the propositional axiom systems usually proposed in two contexts of belief change: revising and updating. Probabilistic belief change axioms are introduced, either by direct transcription of the set-theoretic ones, or in a stronger way nevertheless in the spirit of the underlying propositional princi...

Decreasing serial cost sharing: an axiomatic characterization

The increasing serial cost sharing rule of Moulin and Shenker (Econometrica 60:1009–1037, 1992) and the decreasing serial rule of de Frutos (J Econ Theory 79:245–275, 1998) are known by their intuitive appeal and striking incentive properties. An axiomatic characterization of the increasing serial rule was provided by Moulin and Shenker (J Econ Theory 64:178–201, 1994). This paper gives an axio...

Foundations of Bayesian theory

This paper states necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence, uniqueness, and updating according to Bayes’ rule, of subjective probabilities representing individuals’ beliefs. The approach is preference based, and the result is an axiomatic subjective expected utility model of Bayesian decision making under uncertainty with statedependent preferences. The theory provides foundations ...
